FIFA U-20 World Cup
In 2015, New Zealand will host the FIFA U-20 World Cup, giving fans and players the chance to enjoy the country's distinct landscapes, exciting activities and friendly people. The FIFA U-20 World Cup is the second most important FIFA tournament behind the FIFA men’s World Cup, the biggest sporting event in the world. The tournament will run for three weeks from 30 May to 20 June and 24 national teams will be hosted, playing 52 matches throughout New Zealand. Some of the world’s top football stars will attend the tournament and more than 7,000 fans are expected to arrive in the country to support their teams.
Stockton Mine axes 151 jobs
Solid Energy confirmed it planned to slash 151 jobs from the open-cast coal mine, located north of Westport, at a full staff meeting on Thursday afternoon. The mine already had 38 roles vacant, meaning there would be 113 redundancies. Solid Energy chief executive Dan Clifford said it was "painful" to be back in Westport to announce further job losses less than a year since the last round of redundancies. The state-owned enterprise said it planned to reduce production at the mine from 1.4 million tonnes a year to about 1 million tonne from July, and would need to reduce the number of staff jobs from 397 to 246. Stockton had lost an average of $2.1 million a month over the last financial year and the situation was expected to worsen if changes were not made, Solid Energy's statement said.
Where to see Prince Harry on his royal tour of New Zealand
The royal red-head touches down in Aotearoa on Saturday May 9th, and will be touring towns, cities and Stewart Island, throughout the week. Prince Harry will arrive at Wellington airport, greeted by the Prime Minister John Key and his wife, and Wellington mayor Celia Wade-Brown and her husband. The public can gather behind the wire fences at the military terminal end of the airport, near Moa Point Road and Cochrane Street (don't go into the actual airport). Next, the Prince will be driven around Evans Bay and then Oriental Bay to Government House. Spot him at airports, footy games and marae.
